The Fraternity
of Royal Ark Mariners

A spiritual journey inspired by the story of Noah and the Great Flood

The Royal Ark Mariner degree (RAM)—also known as the Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariners—is a distinct and beautiful branch of Freemasonry, drawing its inspiration from the Biblical account of Noah and the Great Flood. This unique Order offers its members a meaningful opportunity to deepen their Masonic journey through rich and symbolic teachings.

At the heart of the RAM lies the Legend of Noah, a symbol of virtue, faith, and obedience. The members, known as Royal Ark Mariners, explore themes such as resilience in adversity, familial solidarity, and spiritual renewal. The ceremony of Elevation, the central rite of the Order, is recognised for its symbolic depth and aesthetic beauty, offering an experience that is both profound and reflective.

It is important to note that while the RAM is administratively attached to the Mark Master Masonry, it is not a direct continuation of that degree in terms of initiation. The symbols, teachings, and narratives of the Royal Ark Mariner degree are distinct and complementary, offering a fresh and enriching perspective on the Masonic path.

For a Mark Master Mason, joining the Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariners provides a unique vantage point from which to contemplate the Royal Art. It strengthens fraternal bonds and grants access to teachings that deepen one’s understanding of the fundamental values of Freemasonry.

The Grand Lodge
& Grand Officers

The Grand Lodge coordinates the Lodges, oversees the rituals, and guides the Order under the authority of the Grand Commander.

Constitutionally and by statute, the Grand Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners of Switzerland is affiliated with the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of Switzerland. It practises and promotes the Freemasonry of the Ancient and Honourable Fraternity within Switzerland. It represents and administers the general interests of all Lodges under its jurisdiction.

The Grand Master of the GLMMM is ipso facto the Grand Commander of the Grand Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners of Switzerland. The same applies to his Deputy and his Assistant. The Grand Commander is installed and proclaimed every three years at the Annual Assembly of the Grand Lodge, which, from 2026 onwards, will be held on the same day as that of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons, in September.

The Most Worshipful Grand Commander is assisted by the Committee for General Affairs and the College of Grand Officers. The Committee for General Affairs (CGA) is composed of seven elected members, as well as one elected representative from each Royal Ark Mariner Lodge under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge. This representative must be, or must have been, a Worshipful Commander in the Chair of his Lodge.

The CGA approves the rituals practised by the Lodges, sets the amounts of dues and contributions, supervises the finances in cooperation with the Grand Treasurer, and examines any matter or proposal, ensuring that all motions comply with the civil statutes of the association. Finally, it reports on any proposals for the benefit of the Order and on any matter that must be communicated to the members.

The Grand Scribe sends out the convocations, attends the meetings and records the minutes. He receives the Lodge returns and enters them into the registers of the Order. He is also responsible for the correspondence of the Grand Lodge. He prepares the diplomas of appointment, decrees, ordinances, patents, charters, and certificates for the Brethren, and affixes the Seal of the Order, of which he is the custodian.

Origins & History
of the Royal Ark Mariners

From uncertain beginnings to an influential global presence

The precise origins of the Royal Ark Mariner degree (RAM) remain somewhat obscure, though references to it date back to the late 18th century. The earliest authenticated mention appears in the minutes of a meeting held in Bath in 1790. In 1871, the RAM was formally brought under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of England and Wales, thereby consolidating its structure and supporting its continued expansion.

Traditionally, each RAM Lodge is “moored” to a Mark Lodge, usually bearing the same name and number. This practice underscores the close relationship between the two bodies, though their rituals and symbolism are clearly distinct.

Since its integration under the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons, the RAM has expanded well beyond the British Isles, establishing Lodges in several countries—including Switzerland, where it continues to offer Brethren a path of spiritual enrichment and fraternal fellowship.

The Lodges —
Unity in Diversity

Four Lodges across Switzerland, working in four languages.

While the ritual is identical in three national languages (German, French, Italian) and in English, each Lodge maintains its own distinctive spirit and character.

RAM Lodges generally meet two to three times per year—some on weekdays, others on Saturdays. In some instances, the Mark and RAM degrees are conferred on the same day, while other Lodges prefer to keep them separate. Every meeting concludes with a ritual Festive Board, providing an opportunity to welcome new members and strengthen the ties of Brotherhood.
